Trusting God
When the Tank
Is Almost Empty

By ·

My head would not settle while I read the Word this morning. The reason was all the negative sound, and the answer showed up at the fuel tank.

Every morning I get up and start on my knees. Then I read the Word. This morning I read the first chapter of Acts, and I couldn’t dial in. My head wouldn’t settle. I kept wondering why, and then I figured it out. It was all the negative sound.

I had been counting everything I can’t do. I stamp each of those things with a negative label, and once a thing has that label, the idea that I could do it feels abstract. It stops being real.

My business sits on 64 acres, almost a mile off the main road. That mile is dirt, and it needs care. As I went to read the Bible this morning, I realized I had to do the road. Diesel is very high right now. My last order was 100 gallons, but the driver only delivered 73 because he didn’t have enough. All of that was ringing in my head while I tried to read. It felt impossible, but it was just thoughts.

Then I went to fuel up my Kubota L4701. I was puzzled. By everything I knew, I had pumped more than 73 gallons out of that tank. Seventy-three gallons for two and a half months? As I pumped, the tank was empty, or close to it.

I don’t know how 73 gallons lasted this long. So right there at the tank, I asked God for a little bit more. And he gave me enough to fill the Kubota three-quarters full. Then the tank ran dry.

I’m just saying.

Standing there, I thought about my son. He and I are coming back together after a rough stretch. The other day we were working on the garage, and it was a complete mess. Nothing was organized. I used to run an automotive detail shop, and in that shop everything was neat and in its place. My son looked at that garage and said, “This seems so impossible.”

And in my head I thought, God is the author of doing the impossible. That’s why God is God. Things are impossible, and God moves the impossible. That’s what our faith is.

So here is my question. If that is how God has treated you time after time, how could you keep ignoring him? I’m not. And you shouldn’t either.
